The Golden State of California - the most populous state of America, is also known for its car culture. The reason being California's extensive landscape connected by a huge system of freeways, expressways, and bridges (who can forget the Golden Gate Bridge), hence being in California you need to own a car for commutation.

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) calls for liability insurance in order to use a vehicle and so it is necessary to purchase an automobile insurance policy.

The state requires you to take 15/30/5 minimum coverage - which means

Bodily Injury Liability Coverage

-$15,000 for death or injury of any one person, of any one accident
-$30,000 for all persons involved any one accident

This covers all injuries to anyone riding in your car or driving it.
It further includes:
1. Lost wages
2. Medical Expenses
3. Rehabilitation Costs

Property Damage Liability

$5,000 for any one accident that covers any damage occurring to the other person's automobile or property

It not only covers the vehicles, but also property outside it.

You can also get coverage for bodily injuries that are caused by an underinsured or uninsured driver. Although it is not compulsory to do so, it is essential if you are involved in an accident with un/under-insured driver.

1. Uninsured Drivers have no insurance at all.

It may be that they have insurance which is inappropriate according to the State's requirements or their insurance company denies insurance for some reason-speeding tickets, accidents, drunk-driving etc.

2. Underinsured Drivers are those who have insurance according to the requirements, but their coverage is inadequate to pay for any loss or damage in future.

"Nearly one out of every two-car accidents is caused by an uninsured or inadequately insured driver" - the statistic itself makes it even more necessary to get protection.

The Insurance Research Council, or the IRC, estimated that 22% of the 26 million registered drivers in California are uninsured. It is witnessing a high increase in the number of uninsured motorists.

To tackle this growing problem, the State has the California Low Cost Automobile Insurance Program, or CLCA, created to provide an affordable auto insurance option to low-income "good drivers". The program is administered by the California Automobile Assigned Risk Plan and policies are written by California Licensed Insurance Companies.

Anyone who is at least 19 years of age and a licensed driver for the past 3 years, also a "good driver" with vehicle valuation of $20,000 or less is eligible for this program. There is an eligibility limit relating to Family income which is $27,075 for a single person, $36,425 for two persons and $55,125 for a family of four;

But you won't qualify for cheap insurance premium rates if you have a California DUI on your record and on the contrary may end up paying double as to what the "good drivers" pay.

Basic Liability Coverage For CLCA Liability Policy
. Bodily Injury liability per person - $10,000
. Bodily Injury liability per accident - $20,000
. Property Damage liability per accident - $3,000

Optional Coverage For CLCA Liability Policy
. Medical Payments per person - $1,000
. Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury per person - $10,000
. Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury per accident - $20,000

The CLCA policies do not cover for Physical Damage (Comprehensive and Collision), though it can be purchased separately.

The California Insurance Code 11624.5 prohibits insurers from charging any fees when any insurance policy is applied through CLCA Program which further reduces the cost and increases affordability.

Paying Insurance is never fun and putting it off is easy but when your State provides you with several options to get yourself a good coverage, why not take advantage of it.

So go ahead, get yourself insured and then cruise wherever you want to.
